With the establishment of the modern State of Israel in 1948, the world saw a new Jew arise from the ashes of the Holocaust and from millennia of persecution in Arab and Christian lands. From the four corners of the earth, the Jewish people, the nation of Israel, returned home. The “dry bones” came to life creating a democratic state and a powerful military. But, this was not a new Jew at all-it was just the old Jew getting up from the ruins of his destroyed life in the exile, dusting himself off, and returning home.

Much has been written about Jewish history, but rarely has the “fighting history” of the Jewish people been told. Known as the “people of the Book,” few know the age-old fighting spirit of this nation. From the first Hebrew warrior to the Israel Defense Forces of today, Moshe Katz traces the fighting heritage and history of the Hebrew warrior. He examines the modern Israeli close quarter combat system, Krav Maga, analyzes its components and attributes, and the reasons it is sought after by security forces worldwide.

“Israel, A Nation of Warriors” takes a look at the Israeli society that produced a military force, a security system, and everyday civilian/warrior heroes that have amazed the world. Moshe Katz is a high ranking Krav Maga instructor and founder of Israeli Krav International (IKI). He is a graduate of UCLA, Bernard Baruch College, and Wingate Institute. In addition, he spent many years in yeshivoth (Rabbinical colleges). He brings his knowledge of Jewish history, martial arts training, and lifelong experience of living in Israel to form this unique book.

Moshe lives in Maaleh Adumim, Israel, and conducts Krav Maga seminars throughout the world.

I should preface this review by stating right up front that I love the nation of Israel. I am a Christian, and would classify myself as a Zionist; I believe the Jewish people have a God-given right to ALL of the land of Israel. I also know and have trained with the author, Moshe Katz, who is my Krav Maga instructor's instructor, so I will admit I am a bit biased. That said, my review:
I love this book. As a person who has visited Israel three times, and traveled from Eilat up to the Golan, many of the facts in this book did not surprise me. I've seen it firsthand - the patriotism & remembrance, the camaraderie, the devotion, the memorials to the fallen. Many of the historical facts did surprise me though, especially things documented in Jewish written history that are not recorded in the Bible. For instance, who knew that the patriarch Jacob was a master of the sword? I also found the firsthand knowledge of the workings and day-to-day life in the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) facinating.
For the record, like most Israelis, Moshe is multilingual. Do keep this in mind as you read, and do not expect perfection in grammar, or think that every phrase in Hebrew perfectly translates into English.
All in all I can and do highly recommend this enjoyable book. It is a quick, compelling account from one of Israel's finest warriors.

Israel A Nation of Warriors eBook Moshe Katz Reviews

This book will be liked by people in the United States who want to know how to protect ourselves against terrorists. It will also be liked by people who like to know how an ancient peoples changed from being everyone's victims to proud warriors. It also shows how a small determined country overcome larger population enemies.
Extremely thorough book on all aspects of Israel as a nation of warriors. The author has done an incredible job here. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
As a student of martial arts for almost 20 years the history of where the art comes from is AS IMPORTANT as the techniques learned in the art form. This could not be any more true of Krav Maga. Everything that is Israel is what makes Krav Maga what it is today. My Special Forces Krav Maga instructor Sgt Maj Nir Maman talks about how Krav Maga is not just techniques, it is principle based. Moshe's book will help you understand the root philosphy of where those principles of fighting come from. They are rooted in the history of a people who have from the beginning been outnumbered 100 to 1 by a larger stronger faster opponent. Still they survive and grow stronger.

This book will also help you understand the personal responsibility that all Israeli's feel for safeguarding their nation and how their military service helps to reinforce that into every citizen. I have served in the United States Air National Guard for 12 years and deployed to the middle east and couldnt agree more. Most Americans do not understand what we are fighting for.

This excellent book uses personal anecdotes together with solid research to explain an amazing phenomenon that we, who live in Israel take for granted. How a people, who until recently were 2nd class persecuted citizens in all corners of the world, became or more correctly, returned to being a people with a mindset for self defense like no other nation in the world.

Written in a light flowing style, it is well researched, but not overly academic. Katz brings countless examples of "ordinary" Israelis performing acts of bravely and quick thinking not normally seen in the highly trained commandos. One example, Liviu Librescu, the Virginia tech University professor and holocaust survivor, who at age 76, saved most of his class, by holding the door shut while a crazed gunman was trying to open. He paid for this bravely with his life.

Katz opens a window to the special character of life in Israel, and how this translates to the spirit of initiative and self sacrifice. This is a very valuable and inspiring book.
This is an amazing book written by Moshe Katz. Moshe beautifully describes Israel as a whole nation by writing about his personal stories and experiences connecting us as a nation.

The Jewish people have suffered many tragedies, and even though we are now living in our own land we continue to be attacked and threatened by our enemies. Moshe shows us that in spite of the sorrow our people have suffered, we all have a hero living within each of us.

Thank you Moshe Katz, I really love your book!!!
I enjoyed the book immensely. The only reason that it was given four instead of five is that they guy seems to have serious rose colored glasses on. But that's fine, he's being patriotic, I can respect that.

Also, it was written at a fairly low reading level, then again we live in a time where people don't read a whole lot, so writing at a Jr. High level is probably necessary to get the book widely read.

I do recommend the book.
What has impressed me most about the Jewish religion is its tenacity and endurance. First, for a religion to survive so intact after 2,000+ years of persecution says a great deal about the benefit to the followers...people would not continue to follow the religion if there were not immense rewards for the individual. When persecution and oppression was at its worse the Menorah became pocket-size and the candles miniaturized in order to avoid detection. Israel and its original religion does reflect an uncommon, battle-tested warrior spirit. This is a well-written book I think everyone would enjoy and benefit from its insights.
